Spears - what is legal?

Post by mtaylor » 2014-01-21

In the rulebook I find:

Spear (Red weapon)
Spears must have an overall length between 3 1⁄2’ and 10’. They must have a well‐padded head of at least 4” in diameter since they are used exclusively for thrusting. The shaft must be well padded with the exception of the gripping surface.

4" in diameter measured from where? The tip of the core? So 2" from the core tip and 4 " wide and 2" back along the core?

Any more precise definition of "well padded" out there that I have missed?

The only way to measure a spear tip is in its entirety (typically we use a measuring tape to measure the tip's diameter staight across...), including any core, that would add to the size. That being said, if we can feel the core through the tip, it aint gonna pass.
Well padded leaves things to be desired as far as specifications, but we also didnt want to be too specific. Make an attempt to pad it somewhat (1 full layer of blue foam around it completely or a pool noodle).

A pool noodle for the tip, or for the length of the shaft? For the shaft I was thinking pipe insulation.

Sorry, the padding on the shaft.

Pipe insulation will likely be too little padding for the shaft of a spear, especially if you have a thicker, heavier core.

Also, it tends to break down really rapidly, whereas other closed cell foam or pool noodles will hold up a lot better in combat. The area of a spear below the head is going to be struck a lot, both by people parrying with their weapons and by the edges of shields. Sometimes people will fall on or trip over it. You want something that endures, because remaking things all the time gets old really, really fast.

Speaking of Spears, are there any good sites to pick one up, or spear smiths out there selling their wares? Id like to get a 6-7ft one.

The Edhellen (what are they now? Forged Foam?) spears are really nice. Inox has one. They used ot only be like $55.

Cool Ill check them out. I have a Edhellen short spear but the handle is a bit thick for my girlish hands, hard to hold a dagger in the same hand with it :)

I sort of have one. Anok rebuilt the head a few years ago, and it's now much more compact and rather different-looking from the stock Edhellen spear.
