Post by LordTyrantCort » 2013-02-06

Does anyone have a good source for chainmail armor, been looking for ones that fit the new specs but all are 9mm or 10mm for 16ga.

Hmm. Someone (Gerard?) had found a bunch of stuff on an eBay store. I'll see if I can find a link for ya when I get home and can access FB.

Chainmail armor is constructed of interwoven metal rings, and the ratio of the diameter of those rings to the width of the wire used, known as aspect ratio, determines its strength. The maximum ring sizes for standard European 4-in-1 chainmail armor, both butted (including welded) and riveted, are given below. Chainmail armor made of sturdy links that fails to meet the requirements of AC3, e.g. shark mail or butcher's mail, will count as AC2.

Butted Mail must have an aspect ratio of 4.8 or less, as follows:
12g rings must be no larger than 1/2" (0.5") or 12.7mm
14g rings must be no larger than 3/8" (0.375") or 9.8mm
16g rings must be no larger than 5/16" (0.312") or 7.8mm
18g rings must be no larger than 3/16" (0.188") or 5.8mm

Riveted mail must have an aspect ratio of 7.5 or less, as follows:
12g rings must be no larger than 3/4" (0.75") or 19.8mm
14g rings must be no larger than 9/16" (0.562") or 15.2mm
16g rings must be no larger than 7/16" (0.438") or 12.2mm
18g rings must be no larger than 5/16" (0.312") or 9.1mm

Jason, new spec stuff is all over ebay. I just got a shirt from medieval-collectibles, there are some other Indian sellers. Type is "riveted chain shirt" and refine from there.

Looking at +/- $300 depending on style and size. I got a 60" 17 ga 8mm round riveted/ flat washer alternating shirt for $320 shipped.

Gerald- thanks i will look for that exact phrase.
Gor- that one doesnt pass the new specs, so it would be the new AC2. or am i wrong?

And only the flat stuff on ebay passes, i bought a mantle right before the rule passed, 18ga butted, it was the standard for the company 9mm to outside of ring. bad on me, but that is the standard diameter for all the ones that i find everywhere. If we were looking to make chain have a big come back to darkon (with all the rule changes) i think we may have done wrong, but time will tell. i am going to go out and buy a caliper and start checking the chain mail i see going through check in. i think this rule might have just made alot of the mail we have been using get down graded.

The shirt in Gor's link says it's 16g, 5/16" ID. That passes.

The new rules were specifically crafted to not downgrade any armor. I made sure of that. Just compare the old & new specs and you'll see.

Old:
Chain mail must be made with links no larger than 1/2" rings of 12‐gauge steel or bronze; 3/8" rings of 14gauge steel or bronze; or 1/4" rings of 16‐gauge steel or bronze.

New:
12g rings must be no larger than 1/2" (0.5") or 12.7mm
14g rings must be no larger than 3/8" (0.375") or 9.8mm
16g rings must be no larger than 5/16" (0.312") or 7.8mm

Also, I don't want to get into a caliperfest during check-in. I'll talk to you more about that later.

As Cort pointed out to me in a PM, the new rule should say "Chainmail armor is constructed of interwoven metal rings, and the ratio of the inner diameter of those rings to the width of the wire used, known as aspect ratio, determines its strength..."

I'll send a note to the Secretary to get that fixed.
