Steampunk LARP: Antarctica Paradisium

Post by Adrian » 2012-03-31

This is a full contact boffer and airsoft weapon LARP. The theme as stated in the subject line is Steampunk. The goal of this game is to see large scale airsoft/boffer battles between player "companies" (the equivalent of Darkon nations) with the introduction of devices like shield generators, invisibility generators, airsoft grenades and claymore mines, flamethrowers (bb's sprayers effectively), and T-shirt cannons that shoot solid rounds or grapeshot (not yet tested, but these won't be the professional T-shirt cannons, as those are deadly within 30'). That's the eye catcher, now to explain what Antarctica Paradisium is:

The date is 1870, and the newly formed Element Trading Company has discovered that at the center of Antarctica lies a geothermally heated archipelago that holds two mysteries: the ruins of an ancient civilization long abandoned hundreds of thousands of years ago, and element 0: a material that has incredibly strange attributes that allows for fantastic devices to be created. Players will act as prospectors in this newly discovered world, and vie for control of its assets. This world is politically separated from the rest of the world by the assured monopoly given to the Element Trading Company by a newly formed league of nations, assuring that all peoples have an equal chance to exploit the untapped riches of Antarctica Paradisium. Produce, trade, steal, or battle your way into power!

Currently, we're in the testing phase of the game and would like other perspectives on how the game should be ran on and off the field. You can find us on facebook at our group: Antarctica Paradisium (Steampunk Airsoft). We're having our 6th-7th game next weekend on the 7th of April (that's a Saturday); and the events will not interrupt Darkon weekends, so don't worry!

Rules we will be testing this next game: Flamethrower, Personal Distortion Device (invisibility), Disruption Grenades (Turn off devices on contact), and other things.

You MUST bring protective eye wear, specifically shatter-resistant/proof eye goggles that completely enclose your eyes. Hope to see you out there!

I have started a blog about the rules and how I envision the experience of a new player starting in Antarctica Paradisium. This blog can be found here:

I've wanted to do something like this for awhile. I think I'll check it out once I get my airsoft stuff back.

Great to hear! I've set the date for the first official game on May 12th. One of our facebook group members made this video to get us all excited:

We're also trying to have our next game on the 28-29, and we can loan you some gear if necessary.

After talking to Kalen about it, I have discovered there is some confusion on what Airsoft is. Airsoft can be equated roughly with paint ball with these exceptions: The projectiles are 6mm plastic bbs usually weighing .2 to .4 grams. These bbs are fired usually between 100 to 600 feet per second, where the lower rates are enough to feel at 20 yards, and the higher rates can leave welts and draw blood at 50 yards. Because of the dangers of eye damage, all players must wear protective shatter resistant goggles. I went with airsoft because the weapons are cheaper and more lifelike than there paintball counter parts. The ammo is really cheap too.

You can find these weapons on websites such as:
