Statement from the Head Armor Marshal on Armbands

Post by Braxus » 2012-05-05

It has recently been brought to my attention from one of my Marshal's that there was some questioning on the wearing of armbands while fielding. At the last event a Marshal was told, by a player, that players are not required to wear armbands if their torso armor is clearly showing, or if there is no torso armor. This statement was then backed up by a Noble. In this case, the Noble was incorrect. The Marshal was correctly stating what is written in the Darkon rule book. The rule in question can be found on pages 66-67 in the Darkon rule book.

“Armor Rating Armbands
In order to ensure quick identification of armor, players must wear a colored armband on their weapon arm that represents the highest AR worn. The armband must be made of cloth or tape and at least 1 1/2 inches wide. If the color of the armband is similar to that of the costume worn under it, the colored material must be placed over a white band at least 3 inches wide. All armbands must be clearly visible.”

So basically anyone wearing ANY ARMOR must wear an appropriately colored armband when fielding.

To avoid future confusion on the subject I would like to make it known that the Marshals will hold to the letter of the current rules, and as such have final say in armor related matters. If you disagree with any of the rules you can take a proposal to senate and try to change them.

If you are not wearing the appropriate armband you may be asked to remove the armor you're wearing before fielding.

Well said, and a bonus statement:
After being asked to remove this armor, if your garb isnt legitimate for darkon play, you will be asked to not field.

Finally, if your attitude is not pleasant enough for Darkon play after having your armor removed and being told you cannot field, you will be mocked on the boards relentlessly after the event.

Can we get a committee together to discuss the logic and intelligence behind this absolutely bat * crazy rule? I'll concede that vaginas wanna know what armor people have under their clothes, because lord knows in the dark ages no one EVER put a tunic over a breast plate
Image
and announced it to the enemy... I HAVE ARMOR UNDER THIS TUNIC, JUST SO YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO KILL ME!!!! KTHANX

The intent behind armbands was to limit cheating by hiding armor under a tunic and calling a different AR level... Now it's the dumbest thing on the field. Think about it. If I'm wearing 5oz garb leather of AR4(?), but am wearing a plate FOREARM BRACER, I have to put on a yellow armband. Even though under my tunic, is 5oz leather. WHAT THE * DID THIS ACCOMPLISH OTHER THAN CONFUSION?

The funny thing is, you won't find too many people defending the rule. It just needs to go to Senate after some discussion. Do we want no armbands? Only required if you're wearing hide to distinguish it from AR4? Required, to show your torso piece rating?

I would want armbands to show torso armor if the armor is covered. If armor is exposed than armbands should not be required.

Yes. This is how the rule was used for years to good effect.

I think that the simplification that Titus suggests makes sense. What happens if I have two different armors covered? A lot of times, my pants come down over my greaves. Is someone going to complain if my plate greaves are covered and so is my shark mail, but I only have a green armband on?

This is a good idea. However, I would recommend making a proposal soon, as the EB would be voting on rules changes next month at the latest, and after that, they wouldn't be able to make the rulebook until the end of the year. So, get something together and propose it next event, vote it through by the end of June and you should be fine.

At the beginning of the year, they started enforcing the rule, people complained, and yet there hasn't been a proposal yet... Even though several people said "MAKE A PROPOSAL TO FIX THIS."

I like how people act like the "simplification" is a good, new idea... That is precisely why the armbands happened in the first place: COVERED TORSO ARMOR. It wasn't even that long ago...

I'm well aware that it is not a new idea. But it is a good idea to propose it so it's in the rulebook and then everybody is happy and nobody has to wear a stupid armband if their armor is obvious.

True, it's just so insane to me that because the words "hidden" and "torso" were left out of the * rule book re-write in the game's history, it has devolved into this crap... let's get on this!

Former President. 1994 Rulebook was very different than the 1993 rulebook, took a couple years for people to notice at which point it was too late.

I go through all the work to paint my armor blue and orange, to match my garb... and my reward are pictures with a * ugly ass yellow stripe... now I can't use this cool pic in threads about good garb in other places where this would make no sense... *sigh*

This is one of those things that I can't help with. The rule is clear, no room for interpretation. It will require a new proposal.

It has been 5 months since we enforced this rule. No idea why no one has put in a proposal to change it.

Just change it to something like this. Something very similar passed senate and the eb a few years ago but was never added to the rulebooks.

Armor Rating Armbands

If torso armor type is hidden or unclear at a glance, such Shark Mail (or other chainmail type armor that doesnt meet AR2 requirements), players must wear a colored armband on their weapon arm that represents the torso AR worn. The armband must be made of cloth or tape and at least 1 ½” wide. If the color of the armband is the similar to that of the costume worn under it, the colored material must be placed over a white band at least 3" wide. All armbands must be clearly visible.

AR5 No Armband
AR4 Blue Armband
AR3 Green Armband
AR2 Red Armband
AR1 Orange Armband
AR0 Yellow Armband
