question about grip holes in sheilds

Post by Lord Cailen Sendor » 2012-03-22

Question ... a few people use the single grip sheilds ... they cut a hole in the plywood for where the handle goes accross and to I assume protect the hand against striking plywood when the sheild is hit and to keep the gripping surface flush with the back of the plywood ...

From a weapon marshal position is there any now or ever been a ruling on what the max size of these "holes" can be?

What is the average sizes of these grip space holes?

What would you say is the minium and what would you say would be the max diamater of this cut out of the plywood?

Thinking of making one to play around with ... thank you

I make the hole big enough for your hand to go into and then a couple more inches for some hand room. The extra room is so the handle can move in your hand and you dont mash your fingers when the shield hits your arm.

A few years ago when we made ours, we were told they could only be 6 inches. That isn't in the rulebook, but that is what WMs said. I don't like 6 inches, because sometimes the side hits the back of your wrist and that is completely uncomfortable. Since there is no rule, make it big enough that you won't have it hitting you.

I remember the Senate Meeting where the verbage was discussed, it was something to the effect of "ONE hole can be made of reasonable and safe size for the hand to go in". The intent was not to allow people to drill "speed holes" in their core to lighten the shield. But limiting the size of the hole to something like 6" is retarded. You got bad info Iltz.

I use a 15 inch diameter hole in my punch shield. Passes everytime, next event I'll show it to you Cailen and you can see how well it works.
