Light spell/abilty

Post by mardux zulammar » 2013-08-09

Doesn't necessarily require discussion, but it was brought up on Facebook (and somewhere else a long while ago).

Basically, give "light" to all classes.

Things that were voiced:

-Give any class that doesn't have the spell the ability at first level to use "light"
-Possibly remove the light spell from the game and give all classes the first level ability "light"
-"lights" should be made to look period
-Headlamps are prohibited
-casting time?

Wonder darkion powers activate! Form of.. a discussion!

is there a reason behind banning headlamps? Is it to occupy a hand? So that people can't use 2 hands while using a light spell? Or is it basically a garb thing? Because if that's the case we should just * headbands in general. 8p

I do like the idea of "disguising" darkon light sources for IC use. Just because it will look cool.

I made a PD torch so my fighter could have a light source. People could just do more cool * instead of waiting for rules. Think outside the box a bit, thats what RP games are all about isn't it.

I'd like to see people using actual torches. Like real logs with fire. Go hard or go home.

But that's a safety issue obviously.

I think the headlamp thing is probably a garb issue, that was something Inox mentioned, so you'd have to get his opinion on that. But I agree, headbands do look like crap.

Tyriel, while its definitely awesome you took the initiative to do something coolsome people may think you might be exploiting a grey area of sorts. While myself and almost everyone else knows full well you're not doing that, new/er players might not see it that way.

I'm all for just removing the spell from the game and just saying any lighting instruments used while in character must have a period appearance.

i think that's a dumb rule. if people are using a light of some form so they don't trip and injure themselves, then it shouldn't be an issue. safety first.

Make light a higher level spell, ban headlamps for spell use, encourage PD torches and their ilk. The game will look better.

The only problem with making it a higher level spell is that it will defeat the purpose of the spell. From what I recall the purpose of the spell was to allow you to cast other spell at night. I could be wrong but that is usually what I use the spell for in most cases.(aside from safety uses) By making it a higher level spell it will prevent lower level casters to cast at night. I guest that could be a solution if changed. Or they can find someone to cast it, I have done this when playing a non caster. As far as encouraging pd torches. I think this is a great idea.

Why would light be a higher level spell? It serves 2 purposes, 1 not falling in the dark, 2 reading your other spells at night.

I was coming up with one wayto make Darkon less lantern and head lampy at night... Sorry, I find it hard to spout out a HARK, WHO GOETHS YON IN SAID DARKNESS?!?!!?! When its a nerd shining a headlamp in my face...

Role play at night is pretty much out the damn window at this point.

Headlamps are goddamn awful.

First off, I've never seen it done where it didn't look entirely modern. Might as well just put on some headphones as well.

Second, they are much more difficult to keep aimed at the ground. Inadvertent blinding is almost inevitable.

this actually happened:

Headlamp in the pitch black: "Who goes there?!?"
me with hand over my face: "Me."
Headlamp in the pitch black: "You in character?"
me with hand over my face: "Not anymore."
Headlamp in the pitch black: "Huh?"
me with hand over my face: "Turn your * headlamp off!!!"
Headlamp in the pitch black: "Sorry, it lets me read spells better..."
me with hand over my face: "* you." *I leave*
Headlamp in the pitch black: "It's just a flashlight."
me walking back to my camp: "* you, I'm not in character."

I have a headlamp because it's small and has straps on it. I hold it in my hand like tony stark. Simple enough.

I have them at every camp out as well. Never on the trails in fighting places.
