This actually does not help the returning veterans since the rules they played under were changed

We could easily go to a light-medium-heavy system in a way that would leave the vast majority of existing rules unchanged. Consider this:
Light (1 point) armor: Leather
Medium (2 point) armor: Studded/Hide/Sharkmail/CHAIN*
Heavy (3 point) armor: Scale/Butted/Plate
*Red damage does NOT bypass Chain in the same way that it does other 2 point armors, thus it would take one red hit.
So monk's Leather Skin works exactly as it does now. Barkskin is the same (you get a 1 point increase to a maximum benefit of 2 points on a location, i.e. 1 point on an unarmored location, or 2 points where you're wearing light leather or hide). Disgui,se would also remain unchanged: thieves and assassins would have thier same armor restrictions (leather/studded/hide/sharkmail), but could wear chain in disguise (and be able to take the extra red).
