Discussion- Remove relics from land wars
--I've thought of this a number of times over the years and wanted to throw it out there for discussion. This isn't aimed at any one specific situation but numerous issues that have been brought up over the years.
--I like the relics. I think they're great in adventure settings. I think they're fine on day battles. I also think they're very inbalancing in land wars and there's too much confusion surrounding them much of the time. Numerous issues seem to pop up involving who ended with them the event before, how can they both stay in play at all times (as rules dictate) while at the same time be held for countries who ended with them previously to use them in land wars while often battles are going on before land actions take place. Not to mention that some land actions would probably technically be at the same time, so depending on which one happened to be run first, one side may suffer an unfair disadvantage versus another. Unclaimed relics are just randomly distributed, so who knows how could that effect one side or another.
--They make a huge difference in battle. We all know this. Especially if one side ends up with the majority of them.
--My proposal would be just to eliminate all this and not use them for land wars.
--I'd also suggest removing the nonsense about them disapearring on the land map during land searches. if someone loses them on a land search,....whatever. Pick them up and throw them on the field for the day event. Just have them be something fun you can pick up and use on day battles and adventures. Why make them more complicated or unbalancing to situations than seems necesary?
--Not officially proposing this at this time. Just curious what others think about it?

Re: Discussion- Remove relics from land wars
Agree on all aspects.
The only thing that I like about them is that it inspires players to stay on the field longer, so they can hold them when the marshal collects them.
What I like about war is that it brings people to the event. I want to reward them for staying the day, as well. Though I would also like the freedom to stop fighting with the rest of the people when they've had enough.
Meh.

As a once relics marshal I will try and answer your questions.
land actions take place at a different time in game, say Saturday (this was in an old rule book, and I believe it disappeared). The country that "owns " the relic at the beginning of the event can choose the land action that it is used in, after that it may not be used again. This last event the unclaimed AoP could not have been brought on the land war, because of the time lapse.
--They make a huge difference in battle. We all know this. Especially if one side ends up with the majority of them.
Relics can be a game changer; and that is good. At roundtree, Chosen Blood busted there Ass's to get the majority of the relics for their war. And that's there right... Its another facet of the game.
--My proposal would be just to eliminate all this and not use them for land wars.
I would 100% stand against this.

Re: Discussion- Remove relics from land wars
I'd rather see a limit to how many can be brought into a battle than eliminate them from wars entirely. Only a couple of them are devastaing in land wars (Maelstrom, which should be nerfed IMO, and the Arrow). There are way beardier things in the game (like bunjee-pults).
It adds much to the game to include them. People fight for them in two teams. and barter to buy them from others. We knew CB would have Maelstrom last war, so we made Pro-Ice capes. We knew they did not have the Arrow so we made it a point to obtain it in the morning. People doing stuff = good for the game.

Maelstrom is definitely a bit OP.

Reducing it to 1 ice storm (or 2 max) would do a lot to bring it down in power. other than the ice storm capability, I dont think anything is severely OP with it.

Well, it doesn't do a whole lot else except allow you to cut through ice and be immune to Ice Storm (which is virtually nonexistent except from Maelstrom).
It used to do a Black and a White. Maybe make it a 3 point weapon, and drop it to one ball? :D

I wouldn't be opposed to this at all. Maybe people would actually swing it for one instead of just tossing the balls at people (or the ground) then tossing the sword.

Would definitely make it "unique" amongst black swords.

Agreed. There's something wrong with the situation when the relic is a magic sword, and there's almost no incentive to actually wield it in combat.

It is meant to be unwieldy for PC's. It is the sword of a Giant.

Honestly, when playing my ranger or fighter, if it were on the ground, Id use it. Some people just dont prefer greatswords I think. I personally suck with them but like the sword.

Re: Discussion- Remove relics from land wars
People who prefer greatswords prefer their own greatsword.

Ding ding ding. Totally correct. Unless there is a real incentive to wield it, it will be used like a wand & dropped.
Lord Dubh wrote:It is meant to be unwieldy for PC's. It is the sword of a Giant.
Exactly. It used to be big, and did a Black & a White. So make it 3 points, and make it max size for a greatsword.
Also, limit it to one ball.

Re: Discussion- Remove relics from land wars
Id support playtesting this to see how it works out. Please whomever makes it though, make it wieldable. What i mean is, while it can be on the "big" side to represent being a giant's sword, you want it to be built well enough so people WILL use it.
Also, black/white may be confusing. Should we call "Maelstrom" when swinging it? So people know it is different damage than a normal black sword?

Reduce the spell balls to 1 and make it a shield breaking weapon.

3 point weapon would be grits. I'm down.
I wouldn't bother swinging a turd at someone. I would bother swinging a 3 point turd at someone.

How much damage would it do swung 1 handed? 1? 1.5? 2?

Id suggest ruling that it cannot be swung 1 handed, if it is supposed to be a giant's sword, its just too big.
