Increasing the coin cost of potions/poisons/scrolls

Post by Snudge » 2013-04-01

I propose a ten fold increase in the coin price of all poisons, potions and scrolls

res potions would go from 1 gold in cost to 10 gold
Ditto for scrolls

Poisons current prices range from 5 sp to 12 gp for 5 doses.
Raises to 5 gp to 120 gp
Rake, roustabout, vagabond and general no account sketchy
Some disreputable folks even go so far as to call me a mountebank
Holder of non-noble titles to numerous to mention

Cosign. I've been paying those prices for potions/scrolls for the longest time anyway. And with silver being almost nonexistent and gold being the standard, makes sense.

Id like to see them have an expiration date too. Either 1 year from date created, or personally only useable the event created.

That s a rules that can't be enforced...
Fingers1 "but I killed ya five minutes ago"
Fingers2 "I drank a potion cause I was mortalled"
Fingers the elder "lets see the potion"
Finger2 "I threw it after using it"

And this doesn't need to be a rule... Get clerics and mages together and start a guild that enforces pricing on things... Then later the guild can charge money for every potion and scroll. And start rp, to fight against the guild, etc...

Unfortunately, potions can be cheated this way now. Since there is no mechanic involved for using a potion other than "drinking it" what is to stop someone from faking potions all day?

A counter to this is what I used at the Laconian adventure for my Mystery Pots. Participants had to come to me when they used their potion (one of which never actually did, so thanks for the 60gp donation to the club Magness =P)

I see 0 point to this. I think, if anything, this will just cause more withdraws from the coin bag and more work for those involved. Thieves will withdraw 120 gold from country coffers (thus depleting something that doesn't matter at all) and give it right back to the game for poisons. Most people are NOT going to use their personal coin for this large expenditure.

The only thing this does it put nomads and people from newer countries at a disadvantage.

I'm totally against this.

I see no point to it either.

We don't need to cause silver to be more useless then it is.

Wait til we propose that coffers may no longer be used for anything other than land actions, then go for it!

See the reason I'm not afraid of people drawing this coin from their country coffers is that there are already serious limitations to who can withdrawl from country coffers.

The need for this is the utterly low cost of creating anything, the costs for making items hasn't been upped to offset the influx of more and more money into the game. Silver is worthless, my apologies but it is true. There is no way to save it, unless you want to reset country coffers, and even that won't work.
To give you an idea of what I mean. Season rollover happened at campout. Highest amount rolled into a coffer was over 133k silver, or 13.3k gold. To sit here and say that yes a level ten potion will cost you a whopping 1 gold to make and there isn't any need to change it, is the height of folly. You could make every potion/scroll/poison that can be made for an entire year and still not come close to touching the amount of money that a country just made.

We MUST raise the costs of creating potions, poisons and scrolls. I have one co-signer already, can I get a second. We can then debate the merits of this in senate

That was my point. It won't change if you make it gold instead of silver, though.

And there are no limitations as to who can withdraw because gee, all you have to do is ask your country leader to get it for you. If whatever you make will help your country, then most countries will be okay with that.

So again, I'm just not seeing a point to this, because:

There will be no difference between NOW and the price in your proposal. Very little will change - coffers are too big for most countries already.

All this will do, because big/old countries have plenty of money, is enable them to continue to buy while putting newer countries at a disadvantage, and completely screwing over nomads.

And additional thing I can see happening is that nomads and mercenaries will up their work price to cover the new costs of this part of it all, thus causing further inflation.
