Open Discussion: Furs

Post by Lord Valfryn » 2013-06-05

One thing that I liked about the "Dragons Claw" game is that they acknowledge "furs" as base light armor, our equivalency of AR1 (leather).

I think it would help Darkon to have this. Adds a building material, and a viable new look for players.

If we have people wearing cloth with washers and keychains sewn into it counting for AR2, we should at least have something that looks authentic be out there, represented as AR1.

Actual furs, no muppet (synth) fur. No modern jackets (just like how we have a "no leather jackets" rule)

Maybe AR2 if you can prove that you killed the furry animal yourself?

Will the rules differentate between furs, hides and skins?

IE: Rabbit furs, sheepskins, beaver pelts, ect-et-all

Will the rules have a minimum size requirement, or material backing similar to ringmaille?

IE: a few 3-inch square pieces duct taped to armor to provide gap coverage
IE: a whole bunch of rabbitskins and foxtails glued/sewn onto duck-canvas to make a whole shirt
IE: glueing fur to the in/outside of a hat to make a helmet.

Will there be a minimum/maximum fur/hair length? Will there be a minimum skin thickness?

IE: 0.5oz deerskin with very short hair on it counting the same as 3.5oz ram's fleece

We need to give the armor marshals veto power for armor that looks like total *. If someone duct tapes tiny bits together into a frankenfur shirt...well, * them. Send them home and burn that atrocity in one of the metal trash cans.

Otherwise, any real furs. It's only worth a hit; no need to get too complicated.

How would someone tell the difference between synthetic and natural furs. My wife collects both for her photography and it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference.

I am definately down for including fur in AR1, but just wondering how someone can quickly identify the "muppet" fur from the actual stuff, especially if the person is wearing it.

I don't know about all of it, but most of the synth fur I've seen in fabric shops has a cloth backing. Real fur is backed by what is was when it was alive... animal skin.

I could be wrong, but in my experience with the faux stuff it's obvious when you turn it around.

There's also faux leather that's "hard to tell the difference". We're just going to assume that people aren't using fake * to skirt rules. Worst case scenario- it looks convincing enough .. and faux leather doesn't tend to have any real beneficial properties worth worrying about.

I mean... we can apply the "what if the person cheats" argument to just about every rule in the game.

I mean, I would be ok with synthetic furs as long as they are convincingly real looking. If you show up to the event looking like you went on a safari to kill the remaining population of elmos and oscars on sesame street, you should probably not have it on your costume.

I ran into a similar problem with the Padded armor proposal though. Originally I listed specific materials that were necessary for construction, however after a brief discussion we decided that so long as it looked legit, it would be considered passing. (Just the look of the material, not the method of construction)

I think it might be a good idea to specify that furs must meet the "appearance" of actual fur, and maybe leave the decision as to what qualifies as appropriate fur/passing faux fur up to the costume marshall.

No, just say REAL FUR.

If someone cheats, that's on them, and if they are discovered, they run disciplinary risk.

Then we don't give a poor Costume Marshal the task of determining whether something looks realistic *enough*.

We use real leather, real metal- we will use real fur.

Just how people using costume grade leather or faux leather are honorbound to not CHEAT and use their COSTUME as armor- I will impose this APPARENTLY DAUNTING task to the populace in regards to fur.

It's not that tough. Use legal materials, if you don't and you call your COSTUME armor- you are cheating. DON'T CHEAT. Seems pretty easy to me.
