Divine Weapon

Post by Lord Valfryn » 2014-09-10

Preface:

This is proposal is out there for a few reasons. I think this will allow for a new dynamic in roleplay ( highly visible character and Deity alignments), and will make it easier for a player to determine if they should legally be allowed to wield a holy (divine) weapon they chance upon on an adventure. The rules currently prohibit players from using a holy weapon that isn't made from the same alignment deity. This proposal offers some clarity to that, as well as some interesting visual representation.

Also, since there are rules for swiftly/easily denoting a holy weapon as holy, I added a simple way to denote a holy weapon as "not holy" with the same mechanic (adding silver tape), so in case a Divine Weapon is stripped during an adventure, the player can still use it without needing to replace the cover.

Current Rule:
Create/Destroy Holy Weapon
(Spell description found on page 47.)

This spell allows the Cleric to permanently Bless a single weapon. The weapon must be made of silver, but once the spell has been completed, that weapon will deliver ‘Blessed’ hits. The silver weapon must be specially made and purchased with Darkon currency, see Chapter Seven: Special Items. The weapon’s striking surface must then be covered with blue cloth and the name of the Cleric’s Deity must be written clearly on the weapon. Alternately, the weapon may be marked with a strip of blue tape (above the handle or on the shaft). A Cleric may only have one Holy Weapon spell in effect at any time; a Cleric may make a Holy weapon for another character, provided they are of the same alignment.

The enchantment of Divine weapons are permanent, and carries between Darkon events. The enchantment may be broken by having the weapon declared destroyed by the casting Cleric or having the Destroy Divine Weapon spell cast upon it, rendering it a normal, silver weapon.

Creating a Holy weapon does not increase the amount of damage done by the weapon; it only allows the weapon to strike Creatures not affected by normal weapons. The Elders of the event will determine the exact effectiveness of the Blessed Hits done by a Holy weapon.

Clerics may not make Scrolls of this spell.

Proposed Change:
Create/Destroy Divine Weapon
(Spell description same as Create/Destroy Holy weapon, found on page 47.)

The weapon’s striking surface must then be covered with a cloth cover, the color of which will represent the alignment of the Deity called upon to cast the spell. Alternately, the weapon may be marked with a strip of blue tape (above the handle or on the shaft, with the alignment clearly written upon the strip of tape). A Cleric may only have one Divine Weapon spell in effect at any time; a Cleric may make a Divine weapon for another character, provided the weapon and player are of the same alignment.

The enchantment of Divine weapons are permanent, and carry between Darkon events. The enchantment may be broken by having the weapon declared destroyed by the casting Cleric or having the Destroy Divine Weapon spell cast upon it, rendering it a normal, silver weapon. (Divine weapons that are currently “destroyed” may be used as regular Silver weapons by placing a single strip of silver tape above the handle or on the shaft of the weapon.)

Divine weapons blessed by a Good Deity are to be covered in blue cloth, weapons blessed by Neutral Deities will be covered in yellow cloth, and those blessed by an Evil Deity will be covered in red cloth.

Creating a Divine weapon does not increase the amount of damage done by the weapon; it only allows the weapon to strike Creatures not affected by normal weapons. The Elders of the event will determine the exact effectiveness of the Blessed Hits done by a Divine weapon.

Clerics may not make Scrolls of this spell.
.........................................................................
line item optional: Players may use weapons that are one step away in the alignment axis (for example: Evil uses CE, LE, NE, N, CN, LN Good uses CG, LG, NG, N, CN, LN Neutral uses everything.)
