Cosign

Though might want to change the wording slightly

Instead of "When a participants creates their first character and declares a class, they are given 5 gold of starting money."

How about "When a participant declares a class after creating their first character, they are given 5 gold of starting money."

Hrm.

I can foresee the check-in camped by thieves looking for newbies to roll for their coin.

Still, an interesting way to get money on the field that doesn't involve a country.

Yeah, I definitely can see people that are a new face getting rolled for their coin. Its an awesome thought though and we should figure something out to make it happen.

Simple solution for how to protect the new players
Once they declare a class to the secretary, said secretary then notifies the Banker of Darkon or Coin Marshal. I'm the Banker, Siren is the coin marshal as a reference
The coin they are issued is given OOC with an explanation about coin and its uses
Additionally, does coin even get talked about during the newbie speech?

COuld also make them immune to looting the day they get issued the coin.

As far as the last year of newbie speeches I had attended none of the five (spread out over the early months) covered Coin or for that matter looting at all.

The purpose of the newbie speech is not to get the new player acquainted with every part of the game but to go over the basic rules about combat and SAFETY. Safety is the primary focus at the newbie speech; going over proper hit locals, swings, grappling, shield bashing etc. The newbie speech does not go over every spell, class, mechanic or misc nit-picking that is necessary to understand the whole of Darkon; just the things that are important on a safety level and how to properly use the weapons we swing.

Back to the OP: Bendore said it best; make em immune to loot on that day. if they give it to someone else or buy something than its fair game, but otherwise make it unlootable on day one.

I agree with Sir Sturmbjorne on both counts: Newbie speech is an intro to safe fighting. Make the noob coin unlootable, just like potions & scrolls are unlootable on the day they're made.

Personally, I had 15 minute newbie speeches for all of mine with a noble that is no longer in the game, and he covered common spells and all too, and it was very helpful. The newbie speech should make you familiar with the rules of the game, but have a basis in the safety aspect. I know sometimes newbie speeches are overly long, but I'm sure it's possible to cover a lot in 15-20 minutes, especially since people have to go 5 times.

Basically, if you're new and you go to a newbie speech, you should know what is safe to do and not safe to do, and what to do in common situations. Offensive AoE spells and weapons (siege weapons) should be covered with the hit system. It leads to smoother game play if everybody has a general idea of most of the rules.

Also, remember that there are some people who proudly admit to never having read the rulebook. We can't FORCE them to read it, but we do require people to go to newbie speeches. The more common aspects of the game that are covered in those speeches, the better off the game is in the future.

Iltz, youre missing the point.
The newbie speech touches on basic spells, offensive AOE, common spellballs, headbands etc, combat and SAFETY, but it does not go over EVERY part of Darkon.
That is what the rulebook is for.
Going over looting and coin useage and acquisition is not part it.
